Kickoff DERBY WEEK : a Tribute to our REPUBLICAN FRIENDS

For years track officials were close-mouthed about exact attendance figures. However, in 1970 Sports Illustrated researched state Department of Revenue records and found that the Derby drew 100,000 for the first time in 1969, when 106,333, including President Nixon,(left) and Ronald Reagan (right) gathered for rider Bill Hartack's fifth Derby win, on Majestic Prince.
