Teresa Bottorff Perkins to run for Jeffersonville mayor
Former school administrator says she is ‘not a politician’

JEFFERSONVILLE — A longtime school administrator has joined the crowded Jeffersonville mayoral race.
Teresa Bottorff Perkins, 62, former assistant superintendent of New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp., filed paperwork Thursday becoming the fourth candidate to enter the Democratic primary.
She believes she is different from the other candidates.
“I am not a politician. I have 40 years of experience in education and administration,” Perkins said. “I’m very good at consensus and getting people to come together to come up with solutions.”
Although she worked in New Albany, she graduated from Jeffersonville High School and lived on Chestnut Street since 1979. Perkins knows one challenge is that she might be more well known in Floyd County despite living in Jeffersonville.
“I know I’ve got to get my name out there and let people know who I am, but I’m pretty confident in myself,” she said.
Prior to her retirement last year, Perkins worked 18 years in the New Albany-Floyd County administration building after working as a junior high school math teacher, counselor and principal.
“I’ve still got the fire in my belly,” she said. “I still want to do something. I can sell Jeffersonville wherever I go.”
Perkins said she is not upset with any of the other people running for mayor, and she wants to run a positive campaign.
“I don’t dislike them. I’m not going to bash them. I think I’m a viable alternative to what’s out there,” she said.
Perkins said her main focus will be on the economy and how the city is spending tax dollars, noting she has worked with $63 million budgets and a staff of about 700 employees through the school district. She said the city also needs to be more responsive to young people.
“My ego isn’t tied up in this. I’m not running for public office because I want to be mayor but because I think I can do something positive for Jeffersonville,” she said.
Perkins said, rather than a formal press conference with a podium like other candidates have had, she plans to kick off the campaign by inviting the press to her house to answer questions. No date has been scheduled, but the event will likely be held toward the end of next week, she said.
Friday is the final day for candidates to file for the primary election. Jeffersonville Mayor Tom Galligan, Clark County Council President Kevin Vissing and former mayor Rob Waiz have also entered the race on the Democratic side. Clark County Commissioner Mike Moore and 20-year-old college student Matthew Owens have filed as Republicans.
